Perforation is a binding process whose aim is to allow easy separation of paper into smaller parts, e.g. coupons, tickets, forms, etc. Perforation is mainly used for materials such as: paper, card stock, cardboard, artificial materials (Priplak).
Perforating consists in:
- cutting out a large number of round openings with a small diameter at a very small distance from one another – this type of perforation is used for postage stamps, among other products,
- cutting the material using a perforating rule with a non-continuous blade – in this type of perforation, we can make cuts (perforations) of various widths and distances from one another,
- the perforation process is also used in spiral binding. Here, the aim of perforation is not to make it easier to separate the sheet into smaller parts, but to insert a metal or plastic coil into the openings. In this case, the openings are set at a significant distance from one another. Perforation openings for spiral binding can be square, rectangular or round.
We perform perforation on the following machines:
- on a creasing machine, by installing a perforating rule rather than a creasing rule,
- on a rotary perforating machine, which is a machine equipped with a rotary knife with a non-continuous blade. We can install numerous knives on this machine, allowing us to achieve several perforations,
- on a die cutting machine. On this machine, thanks to the use of a die, the perforations do not need to be performed in a straight line; we can give them practically any shape,
- directly on an offset machine by using special steel perforating rule; however, this solution may be used only for sufficiently large print runs, as the expensive “blankets” are damaged in this process.
